Lodging and Lobster Rolls
Neither of us had ever been to Rhode Island before, but we’d been told by everyone and their grandmother that we had to try the lobster rolls. We hit the road early on day 2 of our trip and drove from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Newport, Rhode Island. On the way there, we did a little calling around to see what RV parks we could crash in for a few nights. We ended up at Meadowlark Mobile Home & RV Park where we met Diane and Diana, the two lovely ladies working the front desk. This was the closest RV camping we could find to the water, and the famous Cliff Walk, plus it had Electric/Water for $40/night.
If you’re in Newport, we highly recommend a day trip to Easton’s Beach. It was a little windy when we went in early May so the water was chilly, but the local businesses were still open. Luckily we were able to snag a pair of the two best lobsters rolls that we had during our whole RI trip at Easton’s Beach Snack Bar. You can’t really beat the price either, being that two of their two lobsters rolls and a side of fries (roughly $18.00) is equivalent the cost of one lobster roll at any other restaurant in the area.
Newport's Cliff Walk
We strongly suggest doing the Cliff Walk just before sunset. It was such a beautiful walk to do at that time of day, especially along the water side. It starts at the top of a hill next to the Spiced Pear Restaurant and takes you through an amazing tour of Rhode Island’s rustic old mansions and grand estates. We also learned that Salve Regina University sits right beside The Breakers along Cliff Walk. On the way back, we walked through the neighborhoods behind the Cliff Walk to see the other side of the waterfront properties. It was truly a Great Gatsby kind of vibe.
After the walk, we enjoyed dinner at Flo's Clam Shack where we devoured the Clam Chowder and Fried Oyster dishes. Rhode Island truly was a beautiful state with a nautical vibe. The best time of year to go is Late May - Early June. If you don't mind a bit of brisk air here and there, then you will enjoy beating the crowds!
