Destination: Pink Coral Sand Dunes State Park, UT
Length of Stay: 1 Day (September 2018)
Lodging: Bryce Zion Campground ($35/night)
State Park Service Fee: $8/vehicle
During our stay at Bryce Zion campground, we decided to take a day trip to Pink Coral Sand Dunes State Park, which was only about a 30 minute drive from the campground (located near Kanab, UT). This park is roughly 3400 acres, including a conservation area of 265 acres that is not open to the public. However, a majority of the park is wide open to off-road vehicles, hiking, and sand boarding. Sand boards or sleds can be rented for $20 at the park entrance and they even provide some wax to slick up the bottoms.
Personally, we didn't really feel like paying to rent a board and decided to take the trucks off Molly's longboard and give it a go riding down the dunes (which didn't really work anyway). When we made it out to the dunes, we watched one guy try to ride down with a sand board he rented. But, the sand was very soft, and thick, and he didn't seem to have much luck with downward momentum. It turned out we made a good decision by not renting a board since the dunes weren't very rideable that day anyway.
After watching a family ride around on their dune buggy up and down the rolling dunes we wished we had one of our own. There were some places around the Kanab area that rented ATVs and dune buggies, but we quickly realized that we couldn't justify paying that much for a quick ride in the park. All in all, the state park was a nice way to spend our off day outside Bryce and Zion but we couldn't imagine camping in the park because there really isn't much around besides the big sand dunes. Then again, maybe we would have felt more into it if we were in possession of an ATV and weren't so tired from hiking two National Parks for the past few days.
